Some day….but for now.

Some day, he’ll rather be with his friends than with his parents. He will go on first dates, get a first kiss, have sweaty palms before Prom. He will take the Driver’s Test, get that permit, and feel the joy of a first drive. He’ll make our hearts stop as he heads out for his first errand without us. He’ll go to the beach with the guys. He will break hearts, but hopefully he will always be kind. He will have his heart broken, and hopefully she will be gentle. He won’t remember to call. He will dream about his favorite college and about growing up and being on his own. Some day, he will test us. He’ll see how far he can push. Some day, he may think he hates us…but we’ll never allow him to say as much. And we will always, always, love him. Even when it’s hard to do.
But for now?
He wakes us up by calling, “Hey Dad-dad?” over the monitor. His biggest struggle is deciding which shorts he wants to wear. He loves sharing “cake-cakes” with me (pancakes). He wants to hold our hands. He shares his paci with his little brother, and sometimes even lets him touch his Monkey Man lovey. Oh, how he loves that Monkey Man. Micky Mouse is his hero. He has a crush on Minnie (“Awwww Mimi…” he says). Nothing brings him greater pleasure than playing in the dirt. A new Matchbox Car makes his day. He loves calling my name just to have me say back, “Yeah, baby?” He thinks it’s hilarious. And if he’s really lucky, Dad-dad lets him watch music videos on his lap in the mornings.
We will miss this, some day.

Sometimes I stare at my little man with the same amazement as the first day he was born. They are so amazing and we are so lucky to have them!
