The winter blahs.

Posted on | January 26, 2012 | 10 Comments

I am the first to admit, I get the winter blues. I despise January through March. When I was in school, I hated those months before summer and after Christmas break. As a grown-up, I’ve hated these months because they seem like a lag time. And as a girl who loves to get her work out in the great outdoors, the cold months and dreary weather keep me from enjoying myself. I need the sun and the fresh air to feel happy and good.

Lately, we have had some nasty weather, so when these past couple days have been sunny and spring-like, we’ve jumped all over the opportunity to get some outside time.

We have gone from inside forts and trucks…

to fallen leaves, dead bug hunts, and some much needed sunshine.

How are y’all spending your days? Unfortunately for us, I am staring out my window right now and watching the storm clouds roll into sight. Looks like some more fort time this afternoon.

It’s been abnormally warm here, too, and that makes me SAD. I LOVE LOVE LOVE winter and the cold weather and a break from sweating, mosquitoes and 3 showers a day from said sweating. I also DESPISE putting sunscreen on THREE kids, and myself, each and every day. UGH!!! I’m lucky if one can lasts me a week and that stuff is expensive, even WITH a coupon!

I will say though that the winters are hard with kids, because they do want to go outside and I feel bad that they are cooped up more inside during these months. My kids do forts, too, and they LOVE it when I take the couch cushions off and plant them by the bottom of the stairs so they can jump off. Big hit! If I’m desperate then I break out the Playdoh, too. It gets easier once they are in school and aren’t at home all day where you have to be the entertainment committee 24/7.

Playdoh is a good idea. I think I may pick up a few inside crafty things for Sully this weekend. As for loving the cold, girl, you are crazy! I’ll sweat all day long if it means I don’t have to bundle up to go get the mail!

I’m dying to get out and exercise, but I’m not willing to do it in the cold weather. I don’t want to drag my toddler out in the jogging stroller when it’s cold. I feel bad for him freezing his face off in the stroller. And he expects all stroller rides to end up at a park. :) I can’t wait for warm weather so we can spend more time outside. I feel bad that my son is watching so much TV lately too! I don’t even care that I’ll be hugely pregnant this summer. I’d rather be huge and walking to the park than huge and sitting on my butt indoors! Blech!

P.S. There’s a lady on Pinerest that has AWESOME ideas for activities for toddlers. I’ll have to go on there later and see who it is and message it to you.

We’ve had unusually warm weather here, but it’s incredibly windy so we haven’t been out too much. But the things we’ve done inside are.
-snowball fights with rolled up socks (usually while Mommy is folding laundry)
-open gyms in the community. There are several of these in our area that have toy cars, bouncy houses, slides, climbing things.
-playing with blocks and building/knocking down towers
-cooking (I let my 22 month old do stirring and pouring)
-LOTS of coloring, my daughter is obsessed with it
-Fortunately my 5 month old loves being in his jumperoo or sitting with toys on the floor so we can do a lot of stuff

ooh B has those monster jammies too, love them! I feel you. I hate those months in particular too, I don’t think the reality of the accident has even hit me yet, can’t feel anything…

Aside from work, right I am spending my time smiling! Could I love those boys anymore than I already do? I think not! Thank you for the pictures!

when i was kid, my mum used to give me a giant box of colours (crayons, pencil crayons…whatever fits your fancy) and a stack of paper. i could draw for hours. otherwise, she would also get me to help her bake. i think i might have been a little older during that activity though. mostly it snows during canadian winters (mostly. it hasn’t snowed much this year), so my mum would just let us loose outside and we could entertain ourselves with snowmen etc.
